Kevin Abstract, of rap boyband, Brockhampton, took to a YouTube livestream as he walked on a treadmill for 10 hours outside his childhood home on Brockhampton Street in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was surrounded by fans as they and viewers at home, watched him walk in the scorching Texas sun.
At first fans cheered him on, even giving him water bottle after water bottle, but then started hounding Abstract to sign shoes, shirts, phone cases, and take selfies with them. It turned into an impromptu meet and greet. In between the constant "Can you sign this?" questions and phones being shoved in his face, people were able to share their own art. Individuals shared poems, sang original songs, and gave testimonies of how we all need to be kinder to one another.
Fans were confused as to why Abstract would even want to do this and what it meant. Being antagonized for pictures and signatures as one struggles to walk on a treadmill for 10 hours straight doesn't sound appealing for anybody. Abstract shared during he livestream that Shia Labeouf was the one who gave the idea to do a performance art piece in the place he chose to do it. During the livestream, fans shared theories of what its purpose was.
Before ARIZONIAbaby, Abstract's latest LP release, he shared pictures on social media that had "Teach Me Empathy" as the standout in the stanza where every line started with "Teach me."
Some people theorized that Abstract's purpose was to show that no one has an empathy for famous people. He was obviously doing something extremely strenuous on his body, yet people continued to throw objects in his face for him to sign and he took pictures and videos with everybody who asked. Others thought the treadmill represented him on his journey in the music industry and trying to move on with life, but being emotionally stuck in Corpus Christi. If the lyrics from the song "Corpus Christi" tell us anything, is that it wasn't a positive experience.
At the end of the livestream a picture that read "THE 1-9-9-9 IS COMING" appeared on the screen. No one really understands what that means exactly, but Abstract did say new Brockhampton music was on the way, so that could have something to do with it. Whatever is coming, Kevin Abstract had some point to prove and warned us that the end of his and Brockhampton's journey is far from over.
